Markus Weisbeck

Markus Weisbeck is one of the most internationally renowned designers in the cultural sector. For example, he created the visual identities for the Exhibitions Isa Genzken and Liam Gillick in the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2007/2009). What was unusual about this was that Weisbeck used his own photographs, created specifically for this purpose, as key visuals, rather than images by Genzken or Gillick. In 2024, he developed the corporate design for the Canadian Pavilion.

Weisbeck's work also includes the development of logos, such as for the MMK Frankfurt, and the design of posters, including for William Forsythe. As a professor at the Bauhaus University Weimar, he founded the experimental laboratorySpace for Visual Research, which focuses on abstract image research and graphic design. As part of100 Years of Bauhaus, he organizedManifest of Practiceworkshops and Exhibitions Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan, Bolivia, and Iran.

His magnum opus in book form is his monographMarkus Weisbeck – Do the Stars Need a Reason to Shine?, published in 2022.Itillustrates the relevance of his free, conceptual work for his artistic thinking and creative practice. A collection of free works was purchased by the MMK Frankfurt and the main work, in juxtaposition with a work by Ai Wei Wei, was exhibited in 2016. This work can be seen alongside very recent works at the House of Galleries.
