Gregor Kalus

Gregor Kalus (*1980) is a talented painter whose works of art have a special expressive power due to their fascinating use of ink. His portraits often depict personalities from recent world and popular history, but also special events with which we are all familiar due to their media presence and incisive images. His portraits are primarily based on well-known photographs that have an almost iconic status, such as a record cover by Jimi Hendrix or an official portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

He calls his portrait series "Space forgets everybody". He places all those portrayed on the same level, no-one is of a higher status for Gregor Kalus, the artist does not make judgments in his drawings. His portraits include famous actors, singers, rappers, human rights activists as well as politicians and dictators - they all have one thing in common: in 100,000 years' time, it is possible that no one will remember them. We are all back on the same level: nothingness.

His ability to capture the essence of the people he portrays is impressive. Each of his portraits radiates a unique personality and creates a strong emotional resonance with the viewer. Using ink as a medium allows Kalus to play with contrasts and shading, creating an impressive sense of depth. Despite their blurred nature, the portraits appear vivid and three-dimensional, as if the people depicted seem to have just stepped out of the picture.

In addition to his "Space forgets everybody" portraits, each of which he only draws once, he also creates depictions of film sequences such as those from Stranger Things or Pulp Fiction, erotic scenes and "People in Motion" - people jumping, falling or engaging in sporting activities.

In our first joint solo exhibition, we are showing not only the artist's characteristic ink drawings but also his latest abstract drawings, which are worked with oil sticks and spray paint on jute.
