Philipp Fürhofer

Philipp Fürhofer (born in Augsburg in 1982) lives and works in Berlin. Using glass, mirrors, light, and painting, his three-dimensional artworks function both as light boxes and as paintings. Deeply rooted in the German Romantic tradition, Fürhofer's practice revolves around the ever-changing relationship between humans and nature—but through the prism of our modern consumer society. Depending on whether the light is on or off, the contents of the boxes are either illuminated or concealed, so that viewers are then confronted only with their own reflection. This interplay puts viewers in an active role and encourages them to move around the works and take up different positions and perspectives.

In addition to his work as a visual artist, Fürhofer also created stage designs for many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, and the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. Fürhofer studied under Hans-Jürgen Diehl at the Berlin University of the Arts. His works have been Exhibitions in numerous institutional Exhibitions .

In 2017, Fürhofer was invited to create a site-specific installation in the rotunda of the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. In 2023, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt dedicated a solo exhibition to him in the Metzler Foyer. He recently participated in group exhibitions at the Pinakotheken der Moderne in Munich and the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.
