Allen Jones

Allen Jones is one of the most important and internationally renowned British artists. He studied at the Royal College of Art with RB Kitaj, Peter Philipps, and David Hockney. In 1961, they played a decisive role in the breakthrough of a new figurative artistic position that went down in 20th-century art history under the term Pop Art. A lengthy stay in New York helped Jones develop his own artistic style. Surrounded by this dirty and noisy metropolis, his figures became more aggressive. This aggressive and fetishistic style culminated in 1969 in a series of life-size fiberglass figures depicting bound women in boots and corsets as furniture. This preoccupation with fetishism and obsession paved the way for Jones's later forays into set design.

In his more recent works, he addresses this fetishism of sex appeal. For his subjects from sports and dance, Jones exploits the tension between figuration and gestural abstraction. Since 1980, Jones has created a large number of large-scale steel sculptures, which are on public display in London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and St. Louis, Missouri, among other places. Over the past 40 years, Jones has taught at various art academies in the US, Canada, and Germany. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and an honorary curator of the British Museum. His works are regularly exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and are represented in important public and private collections.
