Stella Winter

Galerie Greulich is showing new works by Mainz-based artist Stella Winter at the start of the season on September 6. Entitled "season 3 episode 2", it is the continuation of the solo show from last year. Winter's exhibition will be on display at Galerie Greulich until October 19.

As the title suggests, the up-and-coming artist is creating her own TV show. While the focus has so far been on places of action - the bathroom, the shared kitchen, the table as a social space - the cast of characters is now the focus of her paintings.

The new portrait series shows friends and acquaintances of Winter, as well as the odd social media celebrity. Stella Winter's style remains unmistakable. Her hyper-realistic paintings allow viewers to immerse themselves in her specially created universe, making them part of this imaginary house party - only without a hangover the morning after. The aesthetics that the artist has pursued since the beginning are also evident here. References to pop-cultural elements of the 2000s and the confusion of objects and motifs always form the common thread in her oil paintings. In a way, the Mainz-based artist is way ahead of the summer trend of the year: the "brat" summer. Brat stands for all those who are a bit chaotic, like to party and sometimes say stupid things. Basically, it's about a self-determined, not quite perfect lifestyle. And this is exactly what Stella's works reflect: they show us a world that is not perfect, but that we enjoy looking at. In contrast to trends that disappear as quickly as they appear, Winter's visual language remains young, fresh and informal. The works manage to capture and preserve youthfulness, as in the painting "Roomate" (2024). The picture shows a young woman in a miniskirt, with high lace-up boots, a half-closed sweatshirt jacket and a wide-cut white top that reveals a red lace bra. She wears narrow glasses on the tip of her nose and holds a cigarette in her left hand. The lighter on her right has the inscription "BOTOX no emotions". Every detail is exactly where it should be, whether this is intentional or not remains unanswered. The interplay of chance and control works so smoothly that it is impossible to tell these two components apart. But you don't have to, because the pictures are worth looking at either way. Whether in detail or as a whole, even supposed inconsistencies in the picture fit into the action and are part of this aesthetic. A pictorial aesthetic that is extroverted and worth seeing in person. With this in mind, Galerie Greulich cordially invites you to the house party at Fahrgasse 22.
