Maria von Heider-Schweinitz

To mark the start of the Frankfurt galleries' season, the gallery is showing the painter Maria von Heider-Schweinitz (1894 Darmstadt-1974 Frankfurt), who belongs to the second generation of Expressionists. After her first artistic training with George Mosson in Berlin in 1911, her marriage and the birth of three children, she studied sculpture at the Städelschule under Richard Scheibe from 1925 to 1929. In 1932, she turned to painting, encouraged by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, with whom she had a lifelong friendship. Her studio at the Städelschule was destroyed towards the end of the war and she lost 300 paintings. In 1949, Hanna Bekker vom Rath dedicated a solo exhibition to her at the Frankfurt Kunstkabinett. In 2013, the artist's work was on display at Museum Giersch as part of the exhibition "Künstlerin sein! Ottilie W. Roderstein. Emy Roeder. Maria von Heider-Schweinitz".
