Corps de la Ligne – Works on Paper
Bode Gallery

In the exhibition *Corps de la ligne*, Alain Clément unfolds a multifaceted interplay of line, color, and surface, in which the medium of paper becomes not merely a support but an active resonant space. The works on display conceive of the line not as a mere means of contouring, but as a physical manifestation that expands, condenses, and enters into a dynamic relationship with the surface.
The deliberate focus on works on paper draws attention to an aspect of Clément’s practice in which the immediacy of his artistic thinking is particularly evident. Unlike in painting, paper offers little room for correction or revision: marks remain visible, decisions are irreversible. In this directness, the drawing process itself becomes tangible as a sequence of gestures that manifest directly on the surface.
At first glance, Clément’s compositions appear marked by a clear formal rigor. Yet this order is permeated by organic, recurring formations that elude a purely abstract interpretation. They evoke floral, vegetal, or even corporeal associations, as if fragments of a natural or sensory world were lingering within the structure of the drawing.
This ambivalence between construction and organicity is central to Clément’s artistic practice. His works emerge from an intensive engagement with the history of painting and its questions, particularly the relationship between surface and space. By consistently applying color in two dimensions and foregoing classical means of perspective, he shifts the conditions of spatial perception.
Depth arises not through illusion, but through the layering, densification, and rhythmic staggering of forms.
It is precisely in the medium of paper that this search for a “body of the line” becomes particularly tangible. The surface functions as a sensitive membrane upon which movement, pressure, and settling are immediately evident. Lines do not simply lie on the surface but seem to sink into it or emerge from it. This creates a dense intimacy between gesture and medium, in which the drawing not only becomes visible but takes on an almost physical quality.
Color acts as an independent agent in this process. Its luminosity enhances the spatial effect of the two-dimensional compositions while simultaneously contributing to the sensual charge of the forms.
Repetition and variation function as structuring principles that produce an open framework without fixing it to a stable order.
Corps de la ligne highlights a central aspect of Clément’s works on paper: the immediacy of his drawing process. The exhibition allows visitors to experience how the line asserts itself here not as a preparatory element, but as an independent statement—direct, irreversible, and closely bound to the material.
