Kamilla Szijs’ artistic practice is characterized by minimalism, reduction, and a radical focus on the line as the fundamental element of drawing. She deliberately eschews narrative, color, and titles in order to allow the viewer the greatest possible freedom of interpretation. Starting with printmaking and reproducible techniques, she treated printing plates as independent units before turning to unique pencil and drypoint drawings, which she often transforms into large-scale installations.
Through repetition and rigorously developed systems, dense, net-like structures emerge from lines, dots, and rhythmic variations. Her working method is both systematic and intuitive, characterized by slow, precise, and physically demanding processes. In doing so, she explores opposites such as order and chaos, part and whole, as well as microcosm and macrocosm, and focuses on inner processes rather than external reality.
Influenced by music as well as scientific and philosophical questions—particularly from physics—her works aim for an immediate, almost physical effect comparable to the direct experience of sound.
