WHERE LINES BECOME SPACE
Galerie Maurer
Jeongmoon Choi’sartistic practice unfolds at the intersection of line, plane, and space. The starting point is the straight line, which is transferred into space with the aid of threads and expands there into three-dimensional drawings—“Drawings in Space.” The thread functions here as a drawing medium in which the line materializes and simultaneously transforms: as a trace, as a structure, as a phenomenon of light. In this shift, it breaks free from the two-dimensionality of the surface and inscribes itself into the experiential space, where it becomes perceptible as a spatial configuration. […] At the same time, the works respond sensitively to the viewer’s movements: even minimal changes in position lead to visual shifts. Any attempt to fix the work by standing still remains inevitably incomplete. This creates a fragile, dynamic relationship between the work and the viewer, in which perception, movement, and meaning are inextricably linked.
Fabric is supple; it sags, folds, or ripples. Alke Reeh deliberately employs this as a counterpoint to geometric form. The material’s properties ensure that the result is not a cold, technical work; rather, the two—geometry and fabric—compete with one another. […] From a compactly folded object, a form that extends into the space emerges during the process of unfolding. This form encloses space, dividing it into inside and outside, into what lies before and behind. Here, folds and pleats represent an efficient construction principle that has long been used in architecture and engineering—for both spatial formation and load-bearing. […]
The works are intended to be legible; the underlying principle can always be traced in the details, yet cannot be deciphered at a glance as a whole. The eye explores complex rhythms by repeatedly sweeping tentatively across the surface, storing what has just been perceived, and tracing possible principles of order.
