Christopher Kieling redefines structural figuration: psychological stages between graphic rigor and theatrical narrative.

The E30 Gallery Frankfurt is dedicating the comprehensive solo exhibition "Between Calm and Motion" to the Berlin painter Christopher Kieling (*1988). You are invited to immerse yourself in the unique aesthetics of an artist who is considered an indispensable voice in contemporary German painting and redefines structural figuration.

Kieling's unique method is a fusion of the formal discipline of graphic design and a deep-rooted understanding of theatrical stage design. A graduate of the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London (BA in Graphic Design), Kieling uses the rigor of design to create controlled psychological stages.

The title "Between Calm and Motion" captures the central area of tension in Kieling's work:

  • The "Calm" can be found in the structural clarity, the hard geometric patterns and the smooth pastel surfaces, inspired by mathematically influenced works such as those by M.C. Escher and Euan Uglow.

  • The "motion" manifests itself in the expressive gestures of the protagonists and the deliberately placed "props".

As the son of stage actors, theater is a central motif and source of inspiration that gave him the courage to embark on his artistic path. His compositions always function as stages that create a conscious dialog between characters and their surroundings, whose stories you have to actively decipher.

In the gallery space and the adjoining offices, we are showing works from the last four years. These include the internationally recognized Sierra series, with which Kieling confirmed his status as an interpretive voice in 2020. Other key works such as "Falling Cherries" illustrate how Kieling fragments the reality of figures with geometric planes of color to achieve a unique structural clarity. Discover the fascinating depth of his meticulously controlled, psychological stage spaces.
