JUST PAPER! Three positions in paper art
Galerie Maurer
Paper is patient, it can be cut, pierced, folded, scored, torn, embossed, carved, layered, burned, bundled, printed, colored and much more. Dorthe Goeden, Andreas Kocks and Tilmann Zahn make use of these almost infinite possibilities of paper, exploring the limits of the material and creating great art from a fragile product.
In her artistic work, Dorthe Goeden examines processes of perception and memory. She is interested in looking at the everyday, the fleeting and the incidental, as well as the interweaving of naturally grown and culturally developed structures. The basic creative element is the line, which Goeden detaches from the graphic idea of two-dimensionality and thus questions the boundaries of image, object and space.
Andreas Kocks creates large-scale yet delicately crafted paper installations. Each work begins with a series of drawings before he starts cutting and creating new forms. The cut paper is used to create multi-layered, structured works that give the impression of three-dimensional brushstrokes, splashes and drops and combine elements from different artistic disciplines: The linearity of drawing, the painterly brushstroke, the spatial moment of architecture and the physicality of sculpture.
Tilmann Zahn creates filigree yet massive shapes on firm handmade paper, which he then tears out rather than cutting out. His hands create virtuoso torn paper structures, some of which develop a sculptural effect as wall works, others as installations floating freely in space. The organic-looking torn edges and blurred openings give the constructive compositions an impressive liveliness and spatiality. In this exhibition, the group of works of colored paper objects is shown, which in their organic-anatomical structures are reminiscent of neuronal grid and net structures, as they are omnipresent in nature as a building principle.
