Mindmaps - A poetic cosmos
Galerie Heike Strelow

George Steinmann Mindmaps - A Poetic Cosmos October 25 - December 5, 2025 With this exhibition, the gallery continues its long-standing collaboration with George Steinmann, with whose work it opened the gallery in 2007. The Bernese artist, musician and researcher is one of the important voices of an art that combines aesthetic thinking with social responsibility.

His mind maps are condensations of knowledge, perception and materiality. They combine art, science and spirituality to create a poetic cosmos that questions the state of our planet. George Steinmann (*1950 in Bern) studied painting, music and Afro-American studies in Basel and San Francisco. Since 1979 he has realized international Exhibitions, performances and transdisciplinary projects. His works have been shown at the Pori Art Museum, Zentrum Paul Klee Bern, Helmhaus Zurich, LACE Los Angeles, Kunstmuseum Thun, ERES-Stiftung Munich, Taxispalais Innsbruck, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki and Kunstmuseum Solothurn, among others. He was awarded the Meret Oppenheim Art Prize by the Federal Office of Culture for his consistent, exploratory work. In 2011, the University of Bern awarded him an honorary doctorate for his mediation between art, science and ethics.

The mind maps form the graphic center of his work. They bear titles such as The Art of Collaboration, Raising Public Awareness or Other Sources. In writing, lines, glazes and natural pigments, they unfold a network of thoughts, colors and chemical reactions. Steinmann works with natural substances such as berries, minerals and spring water, which he collects, presses and extracts himself. These pigments not only store color, but also energy, memory and a form of knowledge that defies purely rational analysis. The mind maps are simultaneously notations, fields of research and poetic spaces. They address questions of sustainability, cultural memory and ecological balance. They show that art can produce knowledge - beyond language, through the interplay of matter and spirit. Steinmann sees his art as a form of knowledge on a par with the natural sciences and humanities. The occasion for the exhibition is the book Mindmaps, edited by Katrin Sperry and Isabel Zürcher and published by Hirmer Verlag Munich.
