Gunilla Jähnichen

: unbroken promises
, Galerie Hübner + Hübner
With unbroken promises, Gunilla Jähnichen focuses on emotion, expression, and the question of what effect gestures can have on viewers. In multiple layers of color and reduced lines, her figures move between figuration and abstraction. Not only human forms become visible, but also inner states that are reflected in facial expressions, gestures, and form.
Jähnichen is interested in the emotional responses these figures evoke—from closeness and affection to uncertainty and tender vulnerability.
The exhibition title, unbroken promises, refers to the fragile relationship between expectation and fulfillment: a promise always carries with it the risk of being broken, and yet it retains the power to inspire trust. Jähnichen takes a playful yet precise look at what we believe we recognize in lines and surfaces, and at how quickly we read something human into abstract symbols.
