I saw a rainbow at midnight … At night, all cats are gray
Galerie 3AP

With I saw a rainbow at midnight … At night, all cats are grey , die Galerie presents its fourth and final solo show of the year. It is a fitting conclusion to a year that has been particularly significant for the Düsseldorf-based gallery: in 2025, it opened its second branch in Frankfurt, which has quickly established itself as a new, vibrant venue for contemporary art. Jacqueline Hen presents her impressive H-Series, a series of works that intertwine painting, materiality, and perception. The works consist of relief-like, impasto color structures on iridescent image carriers that transform depending on the viewer's perspective. The result is a finely balanced interplay between visibility and concealment, between color phenomenon and gray.

On her artistic practice: Hen explores the relationship between surface and depth, between material presence and immaterial perception. Her works open up spaces for association that are reminiscent of cosmological structures—spirals, fields, event horizons—while at the same time developing a precise, almost analytical visual language.

About the curatorial concept: The exhibition follows a clearly structured hanging, while the formats of the works themselves are based on mathematical proportion systems such as the golden ratio. This creates a visual structure that reflects order, measure, and economy of perception, precisely rhythmicizing the dialogue between the work and the space.

Jacqueline Hen (born 1989) is a German light artist whose work lies at the intersection of design, art, and research. In her immersive light installations, she explores body perception and the connection between physical and virtual spaces. Hen studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and worked at the Tomás Saraceno studio. In 2019, she received the International Light Art Award. She lives and works in Cologne and Wiesbaden.

Extended installation in the air-raid shelter: As part of the exhibition, the air-raid shelter in the basement will also be used in addition to the main room. There, Hen will present the installation One’s sunset is another one’s sunrise. The work opens up a global perspective on the sun: a celestial body that neither rises nor sets and shines even at night, yet is deeply inscribed in cultural projections, power structures, and constructed realities. In the installation, an artificial sun encounters a basin filled with black-colored water, whose surface particles reflect its light; wind sets these in motion, accompanied by an immersive soundscape.
