Wooden Sculptures
Gallery Hübner + Hübner
The exhibition "Wooden Sculptures" featuring new works by Freiburg artist Johannes Hepp at the Hübner + Hübner Gallery promises a reunion with familiar groups of works, such as the small-format figures gazing from their planets on the wall into the vastness of the (exhibition) space, but also larger works in which popcorn becomes clouds. It is easy to empathize with the painted wooden figures, which were usually created without models, as they reveal the idiosyncrasies of familiar people and situations experienced by the artist himself, which also seem familiar to us, even if some of the juxtapositions could have come from a dream. Inspiring encounters can also be found in his box objects. They invite you to draw them and surprise you with unexpected associations and twists. He also takes up major themes in art history, such as the poles of "clothed – unclothed," and implements them pointedly with a wink.
Johannes Hepp usually works with lime wood, but is increasingly adding other objects. In some new works, he supplements his figures with materials he has found, such as a feather or a yellow buoy, which he cuts into a shell and then perforates. The figure of a man in a jersey with vertical stripes placed inside explains and at the same time puzzles the scene, allowing associations with a soccer and a goalkeeper. It is these unusual combinations between seriousness and irony that show everyday human sensitivities and, with their changes of perspective, invite us to playfully interact with the wood, to smile and to reflect on our world
