Vernissage: May 09 from 6 pm, together with the Vernissagenrundgang & Spring View of Galerien Frankfurt Mitte.
In ink, watercolor and felt-tip pen, Malgosia Jankowska creates fairytale-like nature scenarios that seem to be removed from time and thus offer space for seemingly mystical encounters - between humans and humans, humans and animals, integrated into the idyllic and overwhelming nature that surrounds them. It is mostly children who appear small and vulnerable in front of this natural backdrop and who move through this wilderness with dreamlike naturalness despite all indications of lurking threats - toadstools, snakes, wolves, unfathomable forest lakes. They do not answer any questions about why, where from or where to and leave it to the viewer to interpret the rules of their small, hermetic universe.
Jankowska's still lifes take place in an almost surreally enraptured space: What kind of celebration is going on here or has already taken place? These are opulent feasts, but without guests; the revelers remain invisible, but the props raise questions about their identity and nature. Only at second glance do living rabbits, snakes, owls and octopods reveal themselves in the baroque arrangements, abrupt nature vivante in nature morte - are they the guests, or even the feast?
Here, too, the reminiscence of the horror stories of the Romantic art epoch is clearly noticeable; the feeling of the surreal is intensified by the monochrome color scheme, making the forest painted in dark blue or intense red appear unreal and ghostly. The composition is brightened by the white of the paper ground, which penetrates through the trees like glistening light or as reflecting snow, also as sparkling glass or reflecting water surface, but always as dazzling light, emphasizing the unreality of the scenery.
