A Year without summer
Pi - π Artproject Presents
The exhibition "A Year without Summer" presents a fascinating selection of works by New York-based artist Mathias Kessler (b. 1968, Austria), who is internationally renowned for his critical reinterpretation of nature through film, photography, installation and digital media. The show combines works from his latest book "A Year without Summer" with minimalist paintings and works from two central projects: His "Light Phenomena" series, consisting of gradient airbrush paintings based on works by Turner, Caspar David Friedrich and others, explores the transformation of the sky through pollution, inspired by the historical cyanometer and scientific research (including that of Dr. Christos Zerefos) that demonstrates atmospheric changes. This is complemented by objects and photos from his project in Turkey, "Making Something out of Nothing", which deals with the illegal plastic trade from Germany to Adana and in which he transformed plastic waste into carpets - a tangible visualization of the absurdity of capitalism.
Kessler's provocative works question romantic notions of nature and invite us to consider the sky and transformed waste as a reflection of our coexistence and the effects of human activity.
