DIE GALERIE Pioneer of Abstraction
DIE GALERIE
With the exhibition Max Ackermann – Pioneer of Abstraction , DIE GALERIE pays tribute DIE GALERIE life and work of a German pioneer of non-representational painting in the year of his 50th anniversary of death. Born in Berlin in 1887 and working primarily in Stuttgart and Lake Constance, Max Ackermann (1887–1975) is one of the absolute pioneers of German and international abstraction. Always eager to experiment and open to new techniques and styles, the artist's work is characterized by an impressive and consistent diversity. For a long time, Max Ackermann did not commit to a particular painting style, oscillating between figuration and abstraction, between verism and New Objectivity, between geometric forms and pure color fields, until he finally decided in his last years to adopt an exclusively non-representational visual language.
In around 70 works, DIE GALERIE highlights DIE GALERIE enormous range of this artistic genius, which extends from extremely dynamic compositions, often inspired by music, to large-scale color fields in various shades of blue that radiate a sense of calm and harmony. The works in Max Ackermann's exhibition, created between 1930 and the mid-1970s, seem like a perfectly coordinated symphony of loud and soft tones that captivates every viewer.
In addition to Max Ackermann's paintings and works on paper, we are showing a selection of sculptures by our sculptors Riccardo Cordero, Beate Debus, Sonja Edle von Hoeßle, Dietrich Klinge, Herbert Mehler and Igor Mitoraj.
