Artistic Landscapes of East Germany
April 22, 2026 – September 9, 2026
Group Exhibition
Die galerie
We invite you to take a stroll through East German art scenes —from Brandenburg through Berlin and Leipzig to Dresden. Our new group exhibition brings together painting, photography, and sculpture through diverse artistic perspectives. Spanning both space and time, we trace a path around our core artistsVolker Stelzmann,Johannes Heisig,Klaus Zylla, andBeate Debus.
Here we encounterGerhard Altenbourg(1926–1989), a deeply poetic artist and brilliant figurative draftsman. With the renowned photographerEvelyn Richter(1930–2021), we explore the inner landscapes of people in the former GDR, while the young Berlin photographerLars Wiedemann(*1973) brings to light the regional transformation processes of our time. In painting, a diverse tension emerges: old-masterly and mannerist inVolker Stelzmann(*1940); enigmatic, inscrutable, and grotesque inClemens Gröszer(1951–2014); allegorical and psychologically charged inDoris Ziegler(*1949). Hubertus Giebe(*1953) unfolds striking parables about the world and world history, similar toJohannes Heisig(*1953) and yet quite different from him. Klaus Zylla(*1953) seems completely liberated from the conventions of “German” painting, whileEllen Fuhrs’(1958–2017) painterly forays through Berlin resemble the painted pages of her diary. The Dresden-based painterFrank Hoffmann(*1972) deconstructs art history into a blurred abstraction. Finally, as a sculptor,Beate Debus(*1957) speaks her very own language—that of dance and movement.
OnWednesday, April 22, 2026at 6:30 p.m., we will open the exhibition in the presence of many artists and would like to cordially invite you to join us for this festive occasion. Please RSVP by email to info@die-galerie.com or by phone at +49 69 9714710
