Galerie Barbara von Stechow
With “Splash,” die Galerie von Stechow die Galerie presents Renata Tumarova’s paintings in a solo exhibition for the first time. Her works explore freedom as a physical experience, a state of perception, and an aesthetic principle. Trained in the classical Russian artistic tradition, Tumarova has developed an intuitive, process-oriented visual language that transitions from figurative representation to painterly dissolution. At the center are moving, weightless bodies in and around water, which function less as portraits of individual people and more as representatives of collective experiences. The artist dissolves traditional perspectives and creates an immersive experience that physically draws the viewer into the pictorial space. Through the use of bold colors and fluid transitions between abstraction and figuration, a dynamic dialogue emerges between the image and the viewer. Tumarova’s painting is less a statement than an invitation to a personal, emotional experience of freedom within the pictorial space.
Renata Tumarova was born in 1979 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and currently lives in Berlin. She studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg and continued her education at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), where she studied under Prof. K.H. Hödicke and Prof. Valerie Favrè. Her awards include the Dorothea Konwiarz Prize (2011), a nomination for the Lucas Cranach Prize (2011), and the Dorothea Konwiarz Scholarship (2007/08). She was also nominated for the Eberhard Dietzsch Prize for Painting in 2010.
