"ART x SPACE - Between Figuration and Abstraction" The exhibition brings together two photographic approaches and a selection of sculptural works that, in different ways, explore the tension between figuration and abstraction. Despite their different media, they are united by the question of how reality can be perceived, interpreted, and translated into an independent artistic language.
Moritz Koch’s photographs emerge from deliberately staged situations. They take reality as their starting point, transform it through composition, light, and atmosphere, and open up narrative visual spaces that go far beyond the documentary image. In contrast are the architectural photographs by René Spalek. Starting with real architecture, lines, surfaces, light, and rhythm coalesce into compositions that increasingly detach themselves from their original subject. Architecture becomes form, structure, and graphic composition—on the threshold of abstraction. These two photographic approaches find their counterpart in the sculptures on display.
Figurative works retain a connection to human or natural forms, while non-figurative sculptures derive their expressive power from proportion, material, and movement. Wood, paper, bronze, and stainless steel each lend the works their own distinct presence and expressive quality. It is precisely in this interplay that the exhibition’s true dialogue emerges. Both the photographs and the sculptures navigate the space between recognizability and reduction, between narrative figuration and free form. They demonstrate that figuration and abstraction are not opposites, but rather poles of a fluid artistic process in which perception, interpretation, and form-giving are inextricably linked.
The exhibition invites visitors to consciously experience these transitions. It creates a space where different materials, media, and artistic approaches come together and, in their diversity, find a common language—a language that is at once contemporary, sensual, and timelessly elegant.
