basis SUMMER SHOW

From September 7 to 8, the production and exhibition platform basis e. V. opens its doors! During this weekend, basis SOMMERSCHAU offers an excellent opportunity to get to know the diverse activities of basis e. V., including the artists supported by basis, the curated exhibition space and the various international exchange programs. You can expect themed tours of the studios, artist talks, performances and a short film program. In a changing art market installed for the duration of the exhibition, you will also have the opportunity to purchase small-format works by the artists. Another highlight is the opening of the exhibition "Rest in Soil, in Water, in Waithood", curated by Ana Raquel Machava as part of the "Curator in Residence Program".

We look forward to your visit!

Ava Binta Giallo, Markus Zimmermann | Rest in Soil, in Water, in Waithood

„WAITHOOD" occupies basis e.V., presenting an avenue through which Black artists, writers and makers imagine futures otherwise.
They do the required labour to muster a real, living and everpresent black vernacular which is ancient, young, queer and on the move!
Through an installation that temporarily transforms the exhibition space into a site to gather, to rest and to dream access to liberated futures, Ava Binta Giallo and Markus Zimmermann's rearrangement of known materials, proposes a choreography that opens new possibilities of existing and thinking for both the building and the audience.

The exhibition is curated by Ana Raquel Machava.

Gözde Ju, Nazli Moripek | Tu-Tu-Tu!

Nazli Moripek and Gözde Ju present a new chapter of their joint research at basis Projektraum, which sheds light on the themes of protection and migration and their transcultural connection across generations. Building on their stay at the small things residency at PASAJ in Istanbul in May 2024, where they examined cultural talismans for their formal and symbolic meaning, they explore the interplay of technical and ritual protective measures in the current exhibition.

The exhibition title "Tu-Tu-Tu!" is an allusion to the traditional practice of warding off the evil eye, which is generally associated with the idea of doing sinister things. The artists show how a cultural memory and a magical belief in protection can develop and persist. The interweaving of shamanistic and religious practices and their influence on today's protective symbols, colors and materials is pointed out and brought into a dialogical reflection on modern security systems. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the contemporary relevance of ancient protective practices and their integration into modern life.

The exhibition is organized and curated by Gözde Ju and Nazli Moripek.
