Paul Diestel
Paul Diestel (born in Schweinfurt in 1996) lives and works in Unsleben (Lower Franconia). He studied at the Kassel Art Academy, where he became a master student of Mirjam Thomann and Jens Brand in 2019. Diestel is known for sculptures that shift the scales of natural objects and encourage viewers to reinterpret familiar forms. His works are the result of intensive processes of condensation and elude clear temporal or spatial classifications. Starting with natural fragments, which he reduces to their essential appearance and enlarges, he explores the narrative of nature. The effect of his works unfolds in the interplay of space, context, and perspective—a dynamic that constantly reshapes their meaning. His works have been exhibited at the Museum am Dom (Würzburg), the Villa Concordia (Bamberg), the Museum für Sepulkralkultur (Kassel), the Kunstverein Münsterland (Beckum), the Kunstmuseum Erlangen (Erlangen), the Kunsttempel (Kassel), the Galerie Löhrl (Mönchengladbach), and the Galerie Coucou Kassel). He received a scholarship from the Cusanuswerk and the debutant grant from the Free State of Bavaria. In 2024, he was awarded the art prize of the sculpture competition of the Spitalstiftung (Konstanz), followed in 2025 by the art prize of the Goetz Foundation (Würzburg).
