Ulla of Brandenburg
Textiles are often the starting point for Ulla von Brandenburg's (*1974) expansive installations and film works. With her wide-ranging oeuvre, which deals with themes such as ritual, dance, stage, and costume, and repeatedly questions the interface between reality and illusion, Ulla von Brandenburg is one of the internationally renowned, discourse-shaping figures of her generation.
Her works have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Visual Centre for Contemporary Art, Carlow, Ireland, in 2024; at the Palacio de Velazquez, Reina Sofia in Madrid (2023/2024), The Bass Museum of Art, Miami, USA (2024), the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe (2023), the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (2022), and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (Kubus. Sparda Art Prize) (2022), Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2020), MRAC in Sérignan (2019), Whitechapel Gallery in London (2018), Kunstmuseum Bonn (2018), and Powerplant Toronto (2016).
Her works can be found in collections such as the Tate Modern in London, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the MAMCO in Geneva, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the GAM in Turin, and the Mudam in Luxembourg. Since 2024, her extensive installation 'Two Times Seven' has been on display at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Ulla von Brandenburg was recently a scholarship holder in the 'Ombres et textiles' program at Villa Kujoyama, Japan.
Until early April 2026, she will be featured in a comprehensive retrospective exhibition at the Wilhelm Hack Museum, which brings together current works from the last five years. Starting in February 2026, the Barlach Haus Hamburg will present a solo exhibition of the artist's work, including pieces created during her stay in Japan.
