Colours in Motion
Galerie Barbara von Stechow
Expressive colors, light-flooded compositions and a dynamic brushstroke characterize the work of the artist, who was born in Tehran in 1963 and has lived in Germany since 1985, working in Cologne and Valencia. After studying design in Tehran, Varzandeh studied free painting at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, where he graduated in 1992 as a master student of Prof. Karl Marx. Stops in New York, numerous international Exhibitions - including at the Museum of Modern Art in Tehran - and the opening of a second studio in Spain mark his artistic path. Varzandeh's painting thrives on the interplay of proximity and distance, movement and stillness. His figures - fragmented, in motion and often anonymous - appear like snapshots of fleeting everyday encounters. Varzandeh lets color and form dance with each other and creates works that radiate vitality and aesthetic calm at the same time. This painterly balance opens up a space for projections, memories and quiet nuances. His compositions challenge the viewer to move between perception and interpretation. This creates an intensive dialog between the pictorial space and the viewer, in which painting becomes a mirror of social dynamics.
