The Vanishing Act
1822-Forum der Frankfurter Sparkasse

The Vanishing Act examines the relationship between the body as a personal archive of memories and transience and the uniform, standardized materials and structures that are reminiscent of clinical or institutional spaces. The contrast between physical intimacy and functional rigor runs through the work and creates a space of in-between. A central element is the material soap: a seemingly neutral cleaning agent that simultaneously erases traces and dissolves itself in the process.

In Camie Klein's works, it loses its practical function and becomes a fragile sculpture. Cleaning is understood here not only as a hygienic or ritual act, but as a gesture between presence and decay, between the possibility of cathartic transcendence and the question of what remains. The materials used move between uniformity and intimacy. White tiles, polished stainless steel rods and slatted curtains - elements familiar from private bathrooms, spas or swimming pool architecture as well as from hygienic, functional spaces such as hospitals, laboratories or crematoria - are detached from their standardized contexts and transferred into subjectively charged spatial constellations. This creates settings that negotiate the relationship between body, space and memory between structured order and material fragility - the exhibition space itself becomes an archive of change and dissolution.
