STEIGENBERGER ICON FRANKFURTER HOF
Under the motto MUSEUM GOES HOTEL, international artist CHUNQING HUANG has developed a new format for art exhibitions curated at museum level in hotels as a place to live and curated the premiere of the exhibition series at the STEIGENBERGER ICON FRANKFURTER HOF together with MATTHIAS ULRICH, curator of the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT. Two further Exhibitions are now running at the Steigenberger Icon Parkhotel Düsseldorf and the Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel Handelshof Leipzig, developed with Roland Nachtigäller, Managing Director of the Foundation/Museum Insel Hombroich, and Philipp Schreiner, Curator Kunstmuseen Erfurt.
In addition to autobiographical references, HUANG also references her famous artist colleague MAX BECKMANN in the Frankfurt exhibition, who used to celebrate with champagne in the legendary authors' bar at the Frankfurter Hof when one of his artworks was collected, as SILKE HOHMANN reports in MONOPOL. While "Max Beckmann (Painter's Portrait)" (2020), Chunqing Huang's abstract, conceptual portrait of her famous artist colleague, hangs on the wall, an antiquarian book copy of Beckmann's play "The Hotel" stands in the well-lit display case next to it.
Chunqing Huang is showing paintings from her series "Painter's Portrait" and "Wandering in Absolute Freedom" as well as photographic art from her series "City Life" in the Autorenbar and other rooms in the public area of the Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof. COMING HOME, the art book accompanying the exhibition of the same name, has now also been published by the renowned VERLAG FÜR MODERNE KUNST, VIENNA. As a site-specific work of art, Chunqing Huang developed the "Painter's Cocktail" (2024) with the bar manager of the Frankfurter Hof on the occasion of the book presentation, which has since been permanently added to the bar menu of the Autorenbar.
Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, the exhibition has already been extended several times, now until April 19, 2026. CHUNQING HUANG, born in 1974, came to Germany from China in 2000 after studying at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing (1994-1998). She lives in Frankfurt am Main, where she studied at the Städelschule - Hochschule für Bildende Künste under Wolfgang Tillmans and Peter Angermann and was a master student of Hermann Nitsch in 2004. With her series of works "PAINTER'S PORTRAIT" she was invited to an institutional double show at the Kunsthalle and Museum Wiesbaden in 2021/22. Another solo exhibition, "VERDICHTETE SPUREN: Chunqing Huang's Painter's Portrait", has been running at the KirchnerHaus Museum in Aschaffenburg since July 2025.
