The representation of the human body in African art
Galerie von Miller

In this year's exhibition at the Saisonstart , Galerie von Miller is devoting itself to the depiction of the human body in African art.

"Corpus" explores ancient and enduring themes of beauty, fertility, life and death, bringing together a fine collection of artworks from different regions of Africa and their classical traditions. All these anthropomorphic objects stem from a centuries-old ceremonial tradition associated with secret cults. They are representations of ancestors, brought fertility and were guardians of the dead. They protected entire villages from diseases and evil spirits.

Other objects marked sacred places and sanctuaries and were associated with fertility and burial rituals.

However, all of the objects on display have one thing in common: they act as intermediaries between the world of the dead and the world of spirits and ancestors. They exude a superhuman aura that you literally succumb to.

All of the art objects come from renowned collections that were created decades ago.
