The works of Irene Hardjanegara are presented in an 'in-between space of uncontrollability', in which 'an unplannability unfolds from a plan' (quotes: Ramona Heinlein). The artist creates both conceptual and spontaneous-gestural works. We encounter works that emerge from a systematic set of rules and increasingly develop a complexity of their own, as well as works that stand out through their pure expressiveness - an entertaining interplay between spirit and gesture!
Irene Hardjanegara lives and works in Frankfurt. She is a draughtswoman and painter. Her drawings could be seen as conceptual works, her paintings as emotional works. Both thrive on the contrast between the action and its results. In her drawings she follows a disciplined, simple set of rules based on lines or dots, whereas in her paintings she gives in to the impulse of the free brushstroke. The one happens slowly (sometimes over months), the other happens impulsively in a matter of seconds. They are aptly summarized under the title "The Unexpected Beauty of Not Knowing".
