The solo exhibition "Layers of the Real" featuring works by Jan Davidoff brings together pieces from a central cycle of the artist's work, in which he explores the fragility of certainties and the profound uncertainties of our present day.
The artist, who works in Munich and Ammersee, exhibits both figurative and abstract works that deal intensively with natural phenomena and their microcosms. Through deliberate shifts in perspective, familiar motifs are alienated and made new and experiential
. The seemingly everyday loses its self-evidence and appears in a new, unsettling, often ambivalent way. Davidoff's works are characterized by a multi-layered technical approach that combines painting, printing, and photography. The resulting images develop a distinct spatial presence through their woodcut and relief-like structures. Complex glazes between the individual layers of the image give the works an almost ceramic appearance and invite the viewer to explore both surface and depth. In this way, the microcosm of the image can be experienced not only visually, but also almost haptically.
The interplay of light and shadow, captured in the different layers, creates a unique perception of each work. Every viewing becomes an individual approach in which the viewer's perception, movement, and point of view
have a direct impact on the appearance of the works. "Layers of the Real" addresses reality as a structure of overlaps, breaks, and shifts. Davidoff's motifs appear from varying distances—sometimes close and detailed, sometimes overviewing and abstracted. This variability refers to the complexity of reality and invites viewers to question their own certainties and patterns of perception.
At a time when stability is increasingly becoming the exception, Jan Davidoff invites us to understand change not as a disruption, but as a constitutive element of reality. His works deal not only with external structures of nature and order, but also with the inner convictions that shape our understanding of security and insecurity. The exhibition opens up a space for critical reflection and invites visitors to explore the complex relationships between nature, materiality, art, and human perception in a new way.
