The exhibition *Exophony* at KOMET K marks the launch of the intercultural exchange project *TWOFOLD* by five female artists living in Hesse—four with German backgrounds and one with a Korean background. The project centers on the question of how historical divisions in Germany and South Korea continue to have an impact today and shape artistic practices. Through an engagement with art, the project seeks to find a unifying gesture for people from divided contexts.
All of the female artists participating in the TWOFOLD project are members of the Frankfurt-based association FRANK* e.V., a network of independent female artists who come together on a project-by-project basis. The project is rooted in the belief that art should be accessible and open to interpretation even outside of established institutions.
In this context, the participants regularly develop Exhibitions, workshops, and participatory formats such as “Could This Be Art”—guided walks co-designed by participants—or “Kunst@Stulle,” an informal discussion format that takes place over a shared meal. These approaches combine exhibitions, educational outreach, and social interaction in the spirit of an expanded “show and tell.”
TWOFOLD is inspired by the 30-year artistic career of Eun-Joo Shin, a South Korean artist who has been living and working in Germany for drei . Her biography exemplifies the project: a continuous, independent practice straddling two cultural contexts. This long-standing transnational presence provides concrete points of connection for an exchange with various exhibition venues in Seoul and the surrounding area in October 2027. We are using Exophony not only to showcase our work as it travels but also to digitally introduce the Korean artists who will be coming to Frankfurt in 2027 as part of the project and to launch a collaborative project involving the public.
