Myriam Holme

11.10.2025 - 19.10.2025
poetry of the week
Bernhard Knaus Fine Art

For Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025, Galerie Bernhard Knaus Fine Art invites you to immerse yourself in the poetic world of Myriam Holme (*1971, Mannheim). In the exhibition poetry of the week from October 11 to 19, the artist will present an exemplary annual cycle of 52 works on paper created over the last few years, in particular during her Roger Willemsen Fellowship in Hamburg.

The works are presented weekly on the website www.poetryoftheweek.de. Many of them will be shown to the public for the first time.
The works on paper are based on headlines from the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, to which Myriam Holme has subscribed for 30 years. Fascinated by the lyrical power of the headlines when they are removed from their context, Holme began cutting them out and collecting them several years ago. Over time, this collecting became more consistent and developed to an abstract level: the headlines are no longer read as a trace or reference to current events, but as poetic fragments, free of date or article, condensed into highlights of a changing language. Each headline is preserved in its entirety, none is changed or combined - even repetitions find their very own, random space.

Holmes' artistic approach resembles a visual diary: free of guidelines, the works are produced in creative phases and often in blocks, whereby the spontaneity, openness and material-relatedness of a sketchbook is inscribed in every work on paper. The focus is on the inspirational dialog between material and text: For her works on paper, Holme uses a wide variety of material remnants - offcuts and found objects that have accumulated in the studio over the years as remnants of other works. These materials are subjected to an open, experimental working method together with the stored headings. Sometimes the inspiration comes from the text, sometimes from a playful approach to form, color, cut or surface. This interaction creates a free space in which paper, line, leftover material and headline are in constant communication with each other. The result is works that retain a lightness and processuality, but at the same time reveal an individual and reflective artistic and stringent signature in their overall composition.
In contrast to Holmes' otherwise often more physical works, the sheets of poetryoftheweek emphasize the freedom of artistic creation, allowing for chance, humour, lightness and a personal touch. The series provides intimate insights into Holmes' artistic practice: it captures the rhythm of the weeks, reflects the social moods and linguistic images of a year - without becoming narrative, always open to the projections of the viewer.

The exhibition poetry of the week invites visitors to experience the inspiring interrelationship between words and material and to trace the interplay of time and art in Holmes' unique formal language.
