TETRACHROMAT
Frankfurter Westend
The Italian-Slovenian artist Sandi Renko (b. 1949, Trieste) has always been interested in geometric construction and its optical perception, and his work spans Op Art, kinetic art, and geometric abstraction. His primary medium is corrugated cardboard—canneté—a flexible packaging material with small grooves. He uses an airbrush to apply color to the troughs and the sides of the crests in such a way that different color compositions become visible depending on the viewing angle. The title of Sandi Renko’s solo exhibition, which opens on September 5, 2025, at the Westend in Frankfurt, refers to processes of perception. A “tetrachromat” (from ancient Greek) is a living being that—unlike humans—uses four rather than just drei of color receptors for vision and can thus expand the perceived color spectrum or differentiate colors more precisely. “Tetrachromat” alludes to the four-color composition of drei works in the exhibition, which merge in color and form with the large sculpture *Structura*, also on display, which is made of MDF panels. Other works by the artist are presented as installations.
