TETRACHROMAT
Frankfurt Westend Gallery
The Italian-Slovenian artist Sandi Renko (*1949 Trieste) has always been interested in geometric construction and its optical perception and moves between OpArt, kinetics and geometric abstraction. The most important material for him is corrugated cardboard - canneté - a flexible packaging material with small grooves. He uses an airbrush to color the trough and sides of the corrugated cardboard in such a way that different color compositions become visible depending on the viewing angle. The title of Sandi Renko's solo exhibition, which opens at Frankfurt's Westend Galerie on September 5, 2025, refers to processes of perception. A "tetrachromat" (ancient Greek) is a living creature that - in contrast to humans - uses four instead of just three types of color receptors to see and can therefore enlarge or better differentiate the perceived color spectrum. "Tetrachromat" alludes to the four-color composition of three special works in the exhibition, which merge in terms of color and form in the large sculpture Structura made of MDF panels, which is also on display. Further works by the artist are presented as installations.
