PITTURA / PAINTING
Frankfurter Westend Gallery
“I see myself primarily as a painter, because color is what moves me. For me, its energy is physically tangible, and I am fascinated by how it spreads, condenses, and organizes itself—and how that affects me.”(Sandro Vadim)
PITTURA. It’s all about PAINTING—no titles, no hidden messages, just unstoppable color in all its brilliance. Sandro Vadim—who has long been associated with Frankfurt’s Westend Galerie—is now presenting his latest works here for the first time since MEHR / FARBIG 2020. This marks his fifth solo exhibition at the gallery, which opens on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 6 p.m.
Sandro Vadim, born in Rome in 1964, studied fine art and graphic design at the State Academy in Karlsruhe and has been working as a visual artist in Karlsruhe since 1988. Numerous solo exhibitions in galleries and art associations in Germany, Austria, France, and Italy followed. Most recently, the major exhibition in 2023 at the Kunstverein Speyer featured nearly fifty works on canvas and the series panta rhei – everything flows, created on handmade paper.
Vadim paints constantly; for him, the process is as natural as breathing. What fascinates him about the tactile engagement with the material is how the paint “spreads, thickens, and organizes itself—and what that does to [him].” It is, in fact, a journey whose outcome cannot be planned in advance, yet one that is “intuitively guided” by his “inner […] aesthetics and the urge to create and make.” The result is luminous landscapes of color, a unique “cosmos of colors, light, and energy.”
While the textures on the canvas’s surface reveal the creative process, viewing the paintings brings home the power—and at the same time the lightness—with which color can evoke emotions. The artist deliberately refrains from giving the works titles: in the end, it’s all about the color—viewers’ own associations are welcome.
Sandro Vadim’s works, primarily acrylics and pigments on canvas, are on display at the Westend Galerie in Frankfurt through July 10.
