Sarah Geppert

April 24, 2026 – June 3, 2026
A Bouquet of Flowers, a Few Pictures
Galerie Greulich

Sarah Geppert navigates the space between naivism and sophistication—both in content and form. Her paintings leap off the wall with their flatness and bold colors. One sees large forms. The table, the deck chair, the laundry basket—everything tends toward pure form in the picture. Associations with David Hockney and Henri Matisse come to mind. But not as an adaptation, rather as a painterly basis for discussion that leads to new insights.

Geppert’s forms lend a certain dignity to the everyday. And, not least, a certain wit. What may sound contradictory here translates the ambivalence of life—which is inherent in the images—into language. This is precisely what makes these paintings so meaningful: they evoke memories of moments or feelings in the viewers.

For the works in this exhibition, Sarah Geppert spent a great deal of time looking through her family’s photo albums. As she looked back, she realized how deeply the present—her present—is shaped by the past. Role models in the family, the self-image as a mother. Memories are like flowers—they wilt quickly. But you can preserve them. In photo albums. In paintings. And now, brand new from Sarah Geppert: in ceramics. For this exhibition, she has created a series of small floral still lifes made of clay. The ephemeral, yet enduring. A few flowers, a few images.

A publication accompanying the exhibition will feature an interview with the artist and an essay by Wolfgang Ullrich, one of the most prominent art historians in the German-speaking world today.
