POSTHUMAN PLAYSCAPES
Anita Beckers Gallery

The works on display by Dominika Bednarsky and the artist duo Matthias Böhler & Christian Orendt draw on posthumanist ideas in both form and content, destabilizing species hierarchies and playfully challenging the traditional supremacy of humans over other living beings.

In Bednarsky’s ( *1994 in Schweinfurt, Germany) painterly glazed ceramic sculptures, motifs of plant and animal life forms have always taken center stage. In her exhibited series “Vogelsträuße,” various plant and bird species come together. In some cases, they merge into absurd hybrid forms, blurring the boundaries between species and raising questions about coexistence, care, and parasitic relationships. The (dark) humor characteristic of the artist’s visual language is also reflected in the multimedia works by Böhler (*1981 in Aachen, DE) & Orendt ( *1980 in Sighișoara, ROU). Since 2008, they have been creating elaborate installation-based arrangements that address the ecological and social consequences of human action in the late capitalist era. Specifically for this exhibition, they have created a site-specific display installation and present model-like objects in which dystopian counter-narratives to human dominance unfold from the perspective of non-human actors. In addition, Böhler & Orendt also work as individual artists: alongside their collaborative practice, they have for many years been producing drawings and collaged works on paper in which jointly negotiated themes resonate, yet are processed in different aesthetic forms.

The artists invite us to approach posthumanist perspectives not as abstract concepts or theoretical utopias, but as sensually experiential spaces of possibility in the context of escalating ecological crises.
