Reflecting Light
Bode Gallery

Willi Siber’s works defy clear categorization. They straddle the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and object art and arise from a consistent interest in material, surface, and perception. At the heart of his work lies not so much the individual medium as the question of how form, color, light, and space relate to one another—and how these relationships are constantly transformed by the viewer’s movement.

The starting point for his work is often the close observation of natural processes: reflections on water’s surface, organic structures, or the way light changes within a space. However, Siber does not translate these impressions into illustrations. Rather, they serve as a catalyst for his independent exploration of materiality and effect. His works emerge from lengthy experimental processes in which materials are pushed to their limits. In the process, wood, steel, resin, and varnish lose their usual function and develop an almost autonomous presence.

Siber’s treatment of surfaces is particularly distinctive. Reflective epoxy resins, chrome-painted elements, and relief-like structures create works that change with every shift in perspective. Light is not merely a means of visibility here, but becomes an active component of the work itself. Colors begin to glow, shift, or appear to dissolve; volumes seem both solid and immaterial at the same time. As a result, the works exhibit a visual instability that does not confirm perception but constantly challenges it anew.
