The traps in Andreas Slominski's work are not dummies. They are functional, often commercially available devices, sometimes modified, sometimes constructed by the artist himself. They include bear, fox, and bird traps, for example, which are always set up ready to catch, i.e., with bait. However, the question arises as to whom the traps are aimed at. Are they aimed at the viewer, the institution, or perhaps art itself? Slominski does little to clarify this, instead deliberately entangling himself in contradictions in his statements. In doing so, he sets another trap: confusion. In his art, Slominski uses inconspicuous objects and materials from everyday life, then shifts their actual meaning in the context of art, making room for paradox, absurdity, and nonsense. He is a trapper, as he himself says, and his traps are designed to make people stumble—especially mentally.
