An open system is characterized by its permeability and its receptivity to external influences.
It is precisely this openness and fragility that are essential components of the creative process in Simon Halfmeyer’s works.
The exhibited images and objects emerge from experimental arrangements within deliberately defined fields. The starting point consists of formal parameters and recurring structures, often rooted in architecture and botany. In the creative process, these are shifted, superimposed, and brought into new relationships. This gives rise to abstract pictorial spaces and sculptural forms that exist at the intersection of repetition and change, order and openness, precision and deviation.
In these visual worlds, the deliberate use of imprecision plays a central role. Despite the often precisely defined structures, shifts, deviations, and unpredictable developments are not viewed as disruptions but are incorporated as productive elements of the process. They influence the further development of the works and contribute to their final form.
The colored aluminum objects are derived from two-dimensional drawings and extend them into space. They combine the principles of drawing and painting with a spatial dimension and reflect Halfmeyer’s interest in translating lines, surfaces, and structures into space. During the creative process, the space of images and objects forms an open system: an associative field that allows for change and enables new connections to emerge.
