In Berlin, a “Bulette” is what’s called a “Frikadelle” in Frankfurt. So the title gives away where this exhibition comes from: Eight artists from Berlin are showing paintings and sculptures at Galerie Greulich.

Since its founding, die Galerie has been working with artists from Berlin. Over the years, a loose-knit group has emerged whose members are connected to one another. In 2022, they were featured for the first time under the title “Buletten,” and now the second edition is here.

What unites these eight artists is that they paint with obvious delight, and they have a sense of humor. Their paintings allow for punchlines, digressions, and exaggerations. Yet none of them takes the matter lightly. Behind every visual joke lies the age-old, serious struggle over what a painting can be today.

Fritz Bornstück stacks man-made objects into still lifes and landscapes that lead a dystopian, enigmatic life of their own: humans are absent, yet their traces are everywhere. Media Esfarjani transforms literature, music, and art history into paintings and ceramics—into fairy tales with question marks. Philip Grözinger sends his figures through bizarre worlds that lie somewhere between apocalypse and dream. Franziska Klotz portrays adolescents who are both vulnerable and self-assured. For Peter Kröning, sculpture is a narrative tool; his carved wooden figures are both captivating and unsettling. Sebastian Meschenmoser, a mainstay of the gallery for 20 years, brings humans and animals together in ever-changing, unconventional constellations. Jan Muche provides a counterpoint with his abstract-geometric paintings. Moritz Schleime draws from the same well as Esfarjani, adds pop culture, and paints a colorful frenzy in which irony and seriousness coexist.

The result is quintessentially Berlin: a little cheeky, pretty cool, and somehow warm and humorous.
