In these paintings, exuberant color formations encounter minimalist compositional constructs with calligraphic elements. The intensity and dominance of color meet deliberately placed painterly gestures and restraint. Fleeting structures intertwine due to the viscosity of the paint, interdependent as flowing fields of color or asserting themselves through self-assured demarcation. The sensuality of the paintings is reflected in their immediacy. Alicia Viebrock responds to the different painting surfaces of the works: while bold fields of color dissipate and spread across the canvas, evoking a deliberate imbalance, the gestural brushstrokes on linen find a more decisive foothold, which is broken up by gentle painterly expressions. The latter provokes a delicate shimmer within the pictorial space.

Alicia Viebrock graduated from the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2017 as a master student under Herbert Brandl. Her works have been exhibited, among other places, at the major painting survey exhibition “jetzt! Young Painting in Germany” and at the Rubell Collection in Miami. “Melancoholics” is her third solo exhibition at Galerie Bärbel Grässlin.
