APHOTAL. On the Edge of Light

September 4, 2026 – October 17, 2026
Birgitta Weimer
Galerie Maurer

For years, Birgitta Weimer has been addressing the Anthropocene—the geological epoch dominated by humans—and its catastrophic ecological consequences. The exhibition APHOTAL brings together two series of works dedicated to the state of the oceans.

On display in the gallery’s main room is *MORPHOLOGY OF MELTING*, a series of eight new objects: translucent blue boxes in which complex architectures of melting emerge from layers of transparent to opaque acrylic glass panels in shades of white and blue. The reflective bottoms lend the objects a seemingly infinite depth and draw viewers into their vortex.

In the gallery’s dimly lit room, visitors can view NILAS, a series of collages on paper inspired by black ice—or “Nilas” ice. The space is dominated by the installation DEEP SEA, which consists of two groups of works: the well-known MEDUSEN, which are more relevant than ever given the jellyfish invasions in all the world’s oceans, and the PLATEAUS, which focus on selected aspects of the sessile fauna of the deep sea. The APHOTAL, as the planet’s largest ecosystem, is threatened by the mining of manganese nodules, on which these rare and beautiful forms are rooted.
