What brings a family together doesn't always have to be said out loud. Sometimes, as in our case, it's simply hanging on the wall.
To mark the start of the season in Frankfurt, die galerie mühlfeld + stohrer die galerie is exhibiting new works by Georg Schnitzler—large-format paintings and drawings that depict people as they are rarely seen:
No explanation, no pretense, no protection!
His figures—all male—are usually depicted facing the viewer. Not a gesture of strength, but vulnerability as a state of being.
Schnitzler has been a member of the Salon d'Automne Paris since 2023 and is permanently represented by die galerie mühlfeld + stohrer die galerie .
His works are accompanied by pieces by his mother, the multi-award-winning artist Christel Schnitzler-Steinbach, and his grandfather Gerhard Steinbach—not as a retrospective, but as the roots from which his own work springs.
Gerhard Steinbach painted in a representational style with technical precision. Among the works on display is a portrait of his daughter as a child—the girl with the doll, who would later go on to establish herself as a significant artist in her own right.
In her large-format oil and pastel works, Schnitzler-Steinbach adhered to a strict geometric formal language: luminous, serene, and organizing space and silence.
Her Polaroid series, in which shifting shadows make time and change visible, were part of the historic Polaroid Collection, one of the most significant photographic collections of the 20th century, which was dissolved in 2008.
