Johannes Rochhausen develops his painting from within the studio—not merely as a motif, but as a complex pictorial space in which perception, reference, and staging intertwine. His interiors depict familiar arrangements of furniture, tools, and everyday objects that, within precisely balanced compositions, become vehicles for a concentrated, atmospheric density. In his more recent works, Rochhausen expands this repertoire: the still life comes more strongly to the fore, as do art-historical references inscribed into the pictorial space through books, reproductions, and visual quotations. At the same time, the pictorial spaces open up architecturally—for instance in the motif of the stairwell window, whose ornamental structure and filtered light introduce a new formal and symbolic level. The artist remains consistently absent yet is present in every composition. Rochhausen’s painting navigates the tension between precise observation and deliberate construction: it depicts the studio not as a documentary space but as a multi-layered structure in which seeing, remembering, and painterly thought overlap.
