Exhibition hall Schulstrasse 1A

Project description: "Wege von Farbe" Exhibition on the occasion of Raimer Jochims' 90th birthday with his guests Sabine Funke and Michael Kolod / Period: 27.8.2024 - 21.9.2025, Exhibition venue: AusstellungsHalle, Schulstraße 1A Raimer Jochims, born on September 22, 1935 in Kiel, is a painter, philosopher and art historian. From 1971 to 1997, he influenced several generations of artists in his work as Professor of Painting and Art Theory and - until 1985 - as Rector of the Städelschule, the state art academy in Frankfurt am Main. His writings, such as "Visual Identity", still enjoy cult status today - even among the youngest generation of artists. Jochims can rightly be described as one of the central figures of Frankfurt's art scene in the second half of the 20th century and beyond. The planned, extensive exhibition represents essential aspects of Raimer Jochims' work, but also integrates the guests Sabine Funke (Karlsruhe) and Michael Kolod (Maintal) invited by the artist.

Jochims - the artist The exhibition on the occasion of the artist's 90th birthday is dedicated to the "paths of color" - the element that Jochims pursued throughout his life. His dictum "Color is not rectangular" can be vividly understood in the exhibition through his chipboard paintings and works on paper. Color is his elixir of life. Gottfried Boehm, Basel art historian and proven expert on Jochims' work, describes it at one point as follows: In Jochims' paintings, "the uniform plane of the picture and the rising and falling color gradient cannot be summarized in one perceptual result. Rather, their mutual contrast creates that pulsation of the color surface in which it seems to expand and contract in a concave-convex manner.

The fascination of this experience lies in the fact that the seemingly most expressionless, most empty, namely the color continuum, suddenly begins to move in the eye of the beholder as if it were a living being. The physical eye becomes one with the pulse of color." Jochims - the teacher Jochims was never keen to produce epigones during his teaching career at the Städel. This is demonstrated by the two very different artistic personalities he invited to this exhibition. On the one hand, Sabine Funke: a color painter whose subtle painting style challenges and sharpens perception.

She explores the essence of colors dialogically, through nuances and shades of color. The partial overlapping of the color fields, which she applies to rectangular pictures, in turn produces new colors and color nuances, and with them a sense of inexhaustible variety. The other is Michael Kolod. Like Sabine Funke, he also studied under Jochims. And he also works with color. However, for him, color is inextricably linked to his interest in its effect in combination with plastic materials - be it foam or tree branches, parcel cords, plaster or pot cleaners....
